A song that was written about the frustration of not getting radio airplay has been crowned 'Song of the Year' at the 2003 APRA Music Awards.

In a further irony 'Not Pretty Enough' by Kasey Chambers also picked up 2 additional awards winning in the categories of Most Performed Australian Work and Most Performed Country Work. Including her award in 2002 for 'Songwriter of the Year' and the award for Most Performed Country Work for 'The Captain' in 2001, Kasey Chambers officially becomes the recipient of the most APRA music awards received by any Australian female artist.

The prestigious 'Songwriter of the Year' award has gone to Daniel Johns for the second time. Making his acceptance via New York where Silverchair are currently performing he said, "It's a real honour to get this award." Johns (along with Ben Gillies) was named APRA 'Songwriter of the Year' in 1995. Johns joins an impressive list of previous recipients in this category which includes Nick Cave, Paul Kelly, Neil & Tim Finn.

Craig Nicholls, songwriter / singer / guitarist from The Vines, has been given the award of 'Breakthrough Songwriter'. The world wide success of their debut album 'Highly Evolved' is a testament to Nicholls songwriting prowess.

The Ted Albert Award For Outstanding Service To Australian Music has gone to legendary AC / DC brothers Angus and Malcolm Young and the late Bon Scott. Speaking from the U.K, Malcolm Young paid special tribute to Bon Scott saying, "On behalf of AC / DC and Bon Scott, especially Bon as he's a big part of this, we're proud of the honour of receiving this award." The heart of one of the most important Australian bands of all time, the brothers Young have been musical co-conspirators for 30 years. Their Ted Albert award follows on from their recent induction into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame.

The award for Most Performed Dance Work went to Disco Montego and vocalist Katie Underwood for their hit 'Beautiful'. The award for Most Performed Jazz Work was won by James Muller for his composition 'Paul Bley'. For the 2nd consecutive year, Savage Garden have picked up the award for the Most Performed Australian Work Overseas for their world wide smash 'I Knew I Loved You'. The Most Performed Foreign Work has gone to Five For Fighting for the song 'Superman' (It's Not Easy).

The 2003 APRA Music Awards were held at the Four Seasons hotel in Sydney and featured special performances by David Bridie, Augie March, Disco Montego (with Katie Underwood) and jazz nominee Sandy Evans. In a unique musical tribute Kasey Chambers performed a rendition of Silverchair's 'The Greatest View' while Alex Lloyd tipped his hat to Chambers with a version of 'The Captain'. In a fitting end to the night, 28 Days paid homage to the Ted Albert award winners with their version of AC / DC's monster hit 'Back In Black'.

APRA (Australasian Performing Right Association) would like to extend a warm congratulations to all the nominees and winners of the 2003 APRA Music Awards. Please see list of winners to follow.
